An AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a safety system that ensures that ships are visible to each other by transmitting a VHF signal that can be received by other ships. By entering this signal into a chart plotter, the position of all ships using an AIS system can be seen on the screen. By clicking on the AIS symbol, the radio call sign of the boat, the sailing course, the type of boat, the sailing speed and sometimes the destination to which the ship is sailing will appear.
AIS systems are divided into two parts: receive and transmit. For the first part, an AIS transceiver (receiver) is sufficient, with which you can observe other ships and read the data. But your own position cannot be perceived by other ships. To broadcast your own position, you need an AIS transponder, so that others can also observe and read your position. It goes without saying that a complete system that allows you to see others and allows others to see you ensures the highest security. The average range of AIS is approximately 30 to 40 kilometers from where you receive the signals.
